We began in 2017 as a family outreach to a small church com-munity in Puerto Rico devastated by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. We were blessed to be able to supply food supplies, Drinkable Water Checkers, solar ovens, mylar blankets, garden seeds, and educational materials. Although we have expanded, our priorities remain clean drinking water, disaster prepared-ness, and the laryngectomee community.
For the laryngectomee community, preparing for emergencies -- whether natural or human-caused -- takes on added importance. Check out our special section for laryngectomees. If you need something you don't see, please contact us and we will try to assist you.... we are here to help. You are not alone.
Diarrhea caused by waterborne illnesses kills more than 2 million people each year, mostly children under the age of five.* To make water drinkable, it can be boiled, treated with chemicals, or pasteurized.
Using solar ovens to pasteurize water saves precious fuel (which can be difficult to locate in emergency/disaster situations). Pasteurization kills all viruses, bacteria, protozoa and other biopathogens.**
Drinkable Water Checkers indicate when water has reached pasteurizing temps (149°F/65°C), and Basic Essentials con-tinues to provide these valuable tools to communities in need.
Today, we have reached communities affected by natural or other disasters in Nicaragua, Mexico, Guam, the Philippines, Texas, Florida, and northern California. We remain committed to our original outreach, but now supply hygiene/emergency preparedness kits, face masks, and disaster preparedness supplies to retail consumers, government agencies, NGOs, churches, schools, and the laryngectomee community.
